Protecting the environment

Minimising our impact on the planet

We are committed to making our operations greener and to improving  our environmental performance.

We focus on reducing our GHG emissions, managing energy use more efficiently, addressing sustainability across our supply chain, and managing waste and water conservation.

Energy and emissions

We are focused on reducing our GHG emissions and managing our energy use more efficiently. That is why we put a target in place to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% by 2030, compared to a 2020 baseline. As of 2023, we've achieved a 15% reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 emissions, totalling 123,727 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Read our sustainability report for the latest status update of our progress.

Water and waste management
We are continuously improving our use of water and treatment of waste. As water use is an essential component of the pharmaceutical manufacturing process, and based on our geographical footprint and presence in water stressed locations, we continue to assess sites where we have determined water security issues to be most material.

Sustainable supply chain

We are committed to sustainable practices across our supply chain. Our Supplier Code of Conduct safeguards standards that we regard as essential and fundamental, including protecting human rights and ethical conduct, preventing modern slavery and addressing environmental issues. To improve our understanding of the sustainability maturity of our supply chain and manage any related risks, we use the services of a third party sustainability ratings agency.

Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations

We are aligning our internal processes and our public disclosures with the TCFD recommendations. Our latest progress update can be found in our Annual Report. Through our enterprise risk management framework we assessed relevant climate-related risks and opportunities. These include the impact of severe weather events and the impact of chronic changes to the natural environment, as well as transition risks such as impact of carbon pricing and energy pricing.

Success stories

Achieving LEED certification for our Jordan Head Office
In 2022, our MENA headquarters received the Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating. LEED is the most widely used and internationally recognised green building rating system that certifies buildings according to their ecological footprint upon their environment. To uphold LEED standards, our MENA headquarters maintains high standards in conserving energy and water as well as promoting health and wellbeing.

Linking executive remuneration to environmental sustainability efforts

As water use is an essential component of the pharmaceutical manufacturing process, and based on our geographical footprint and presence in water stressed locations, we continue to assess sites where we have determined water security issues to be most material. The long-term incentive plan for executive directors is now linked to these efforts.

Protecting our environment

Helping plant trees for our planet

We are planting roots for a greener future by supporting tree-planting initiatives in our communities to help protect our planet. Our Canada team contributed to the City of Mississauga's One Million Trees Initiative by planting maple trees and small rose bushes at Mississauga Valley Park. Meanwhile, our team in Germany has supported reforestation efforts at the edge of the Harz Mountains by planting 80 trees in Goslar Forest, an area where trees are dying in large numbers to help preserve local ecosystems.
