Hikma: where our purpose inspires our people

By Hussein Arkhagha, Chief People Officer

London. 23 September 2024 –  Our purpose of putting better health within reach, every day has been our guiding force for over 45 years. We have never wavered in this commitment to making our high-quality medicines accessible to the patients that need them. This is why our c.9,100 employees take immense pride in being motivated by this purpose, recognising that their daily efforts make a significant impact in improving and saving lives around the world. This was evidenced in a recent employee survey, which highlighted that 88% of our employees feel proud to be part of Hikma.

At Hikma, through our culture of progress and belonging, we are working together, supporting each other and driving our business forward in pursuit of our shared purpose of putting better health within reach. Our three core values –  innovation, collaboration, and caring – support our culture and empower our employees. For us, innovation means embracing new perspectives and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. This innovative mindset is at the heart of how we empower our people to proactively shape their own futures and understand steps they can take to advance within the company.

To date, more than half of our people are taking advantage of online learning courses we offer. We are dedicated to developing our talent for future and leadership roles, with 52% of our leaders participating in our new leadership programmes since last year.

Caring for one another, our customers, patients, and the communities we serve is part of the fabric of what we do. This commitment extends to our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We actively promote an inclusive workplace that reflects the diverse communities we serve. Our Employee Resource Groups, like the Black Employees Advisory Board and the Hikma Women’s Network, are key in shaping our culture and driving DEI initiatives. In 2023, we also launched the Hikma Women in Science Group, a global network supporting our female employees in STEMM fields.

In line with our commitment to inclusion, we champion diversity within our leadership, and have seen a14% growth in the number of women in management positions since 2022. We are also committed to 35% of women in our leadership team by end 2025, as we believe that diverse leadership drives better outcomes for our people and the communities we serve.

Wellbeing is another cornerstone of our people experience.  We prioritise physical, mental, emotional, and financial wellbeing programmes so that our people feel supported. This year, we have launched 10 global wellbeing initiatives. These have included enhancing our people’s working conditions by introducing outdoor workspaces, dedicated rest areas for pregnant employees, and various upgrades to our building facilities. We want Hikma to be a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and like they truly belong.

Collaboration is about trusting and leveraging each other’s strengths, so that we can continue to provide a reliable and stable supply of high-quality affordable medicines. Being one team is how we’ll succeed and acknowledging the hard work that our colleagues put in is important to keeping our people motivated and engaged. This is why we are rolling out a new global recognition programme, designed to celebrate and honour our people’s contributions in ways that align with our core values.

For over 45 years, our unwavering commitment to bringing better health within reach has been the cornerstone of our mission. We are incredibly fortunate to have over 9,100 dedicated individuals who embody this purpose every single day. For me, our success is intimately tied to the growth and achievements of our people. Together, we are not just improving health outcomes – we are transforming and building healthier lives across the globe.
